Financial modeling

Students should leave able to explain what a model assumes and which input moves the answer. The tool is in service of that explanation.

Power BI

Power BI is the environment I use to teach modeling and visualization together, so a visual is not separated from the measure logic behind it.

Visualization

I teach visualization as claim-making. The useful critique of a chart is often a critique of the definition, the grain, or the implied comparison.

Analytical concepts

Distribution, variance, a denominator, a cohort, a lag. These are the ideas that make a healthcare or finance number interpretable. I would rather a student be slow and precise with them than fast with an interface.

Learning progression

A progression is a designed order: meaning, structure, representation, failure modes. The research notes use the same order under the names Overview, Walkthrough, and Deep Dive.
